Joris Strijbos and Daan Johan of artist collective Macular present the brand new project Phyllotaxis. A pulsating, hypnotic audiovisual work that follows the natural process of emergence: a pattern starts, particles collide and something new emerges that even the artists could not have predicted.

Phyllotaxis is a project by Daan Johan and Joris Strijbos in which they explore the audiovisual possibilities of self-constructed feedback systems by means of kinetic light machines and modular synthesizers. For their live performance, the duo interferes in the interaction between the light, the sound, and the movement of their spatial installation. By controlling the performative installation through algorithmic composition and repetitive patterns the space is transformed into a hypnotic vortex in which abstract patterns in sound and light merge into an intense experience.

Strijbos and Johan research and experiment with natural growth processes and behavioral patterns. Stripped down sets of rules based on experimentation and observation are translated to digital, self-built systems, that then start to lead their own life. Making it possible for the performers and the audience to interact with the rules of nature itself.

BIOGRAPHY

Macular works as a nomadic lab, in which the members do research and develop new technologies and theories. Currently, the group consists of Joris Strijbos, Daan Johan, Eric Parren, Jeroen Molenaar, Matthijs Munnik and Nicky Assman. Works by Macular members have been shown worldwide at art and technology festivals and institutions such as Ars Electronica (Linz, AT), WRO International Media Art Biennale (Wroclaw, PL), Saatchi Gallery (London, GB), Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (Taichung, TW), AxS Festival (Pasadena, US) and the Microwave International New Media Arts Festival (Hong Kong, CN).

This project is funded by the Mondriaan Fund.
